Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels. That sky is gorgeous, what a wonderful idea. Also, she drilled holes in the side of the tunnels in the exact patterns of certain constellations, which shine through and light up inside.



Yes, the water is red. Salt-Lake-specific plankton give the lake a red color, which Smithson probably loved.

land art

hey guys, when i was sick last week a show on the smithsonian channel came on that was all about land art, and because my fever was spiked, i didnt bother to reach for the remote. Anyway, the program featured ancient constructions like the south american land drawings in chile, the Incan wall construction and features of their famous maachu pichu, and Stonehenge. The program also focused on the land art movement that started here in America and showed a few examples, like Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty and his wife, Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels.

The show finished with a preview of land artist James Turrell's work-in-progress at Roden Crater in Arizona. The photo above is the oculus, located in the center of the crater. Beginning the walk towards the oculus, the opening appears to be a circle. As you get closer and closer, the circle becomes an elipse. It was a pretty awesome effect to watch happen on the screen.

Turrell's work in the Roden Crater is extensive and I'm really not doing it justice at all with this tiny little blog post. But I was really surprised at how incredible it was and how fascinated i became with something called "land art."
